“Unless your heart, your soul, and your whole being are behind every decision you make, the words from your mouth will be empty, and each action will be meaningless. Truth and confidence are the roots of happiness.”
Going back to school at the age of 56 was a brave decision on my part. After this last recession, it became painfully obvious, I wasn’t doing what I was born to do. Teach. The only way I would be able to teach would be if I returned to school and received my BA degree. Years ago when my family was young, I attempted to finish up my degree, but being a single parent to two small children made it almost impossible.
After publishing a book on the volunteer workshop I do in high schools, I knew my calling was to teach. I relate to my students and they like me. I know this because they fill out an anonymous evaluation and they tell me so.
I wasn’t happy in my life because I wasn’t living with truth or confidence. I was getting by. I was tired. I knew I had to find the roots to my happiness. I didn’t want to leave this life with regrets.
Finding the root of my happiness meant I needed to dig a little deeper in my roots. My family roots.
In my workshops, I tell my students how important it is to know their family history. This would include where they are from, their medical history, everything.
I needed to practice what I preached. I joined Ancestry.com and started researching my family history. Now granted this won’t tell me everything about my family but it is a good start.
The title of my blog is My Journey to Italy. This is my journey. It is so extensive, I had to document it. My roots start in Meta di Sorrento, the birthplace of my grandfather. My grandmother’s parents were also born in Meta..
And so my journey begins. I hope you will join me as I search my roots and hopefully, encourage you to do the same.
